The Emperor Has No Clothes

This parable about the pharmaceutical/biotech industry was written four years ago. At the time, I was sick and tired of hearing all the "aren't we great" advertisements that the pharmaceutical company put on TV.

This was before the Vioxx/Celebrex debacle. In point of fact, the pharmaceutical industry is not great. It is simply a business. And many of their products are irrelevant, if not dangerous.

I forgot all about this essay. One of our loyal readers got mad at a New York Times story that implied devotes of alternative medicines were in effect "bumpkins", and that any benefit one derived from their use was psychological. So she sent the author this essay.

Psychological? Tell that to Adam, the only person in the world who has seen his serious HIV infection largely disappear and his immune system return to normal. And all he used was natural medicines.

Psychological my ass!
